Dolphin Watching in Myrtle Beach SC

Planning a dolphin cruise is always exciting, especially if you’re looking forward to spotting playful dolphins and soaking in coastal views. Whether it’s your first time or you’ve been on a cruise before, knowing what to bring can make the entire experience more enjoyable. While these trips are designed to be relaxing, packing the right essentials ensures you get the most out of the journey.

Because dolphin cruises take place on open water, the conditions can be different from what you’re used to on land. So, it’s helpful to be prepared—not only for comfort but also to capture those unforgettable moments.

Dolphin Cruise Essentials: What to Bring Along

Although a dolphin cruise focuses on marine life sightings, it’s also a chance to unwind, take in the scenery, and spend quality time with family or friends. For that reason, packing the right items can make a big difference.

Bring a Camera to Capture Your Dolphin Cruise Memories

During your dolphin cruise in Myrtle Beach SC, you’ll likely spot more than just dolphins. Seabirds, sunlit waves, and scenic views make this trip a photographer’s dream. Because of this, bringing a good camera—or even a smartphone with a reliable zoom—helps you capture those magical moments.

Many dolphin cruises offer fun photo opportunities. For example, some allow kids to “captain” the boat briefly while wearing a sailor’s hat. These playful memories become treasured keepsakes, especially when shared with loved ones later.

Don’t Forget Sunglasses for Your Dolphin Cruise

Although most boats offer some shade, the sun reflecting off the water can be surprisingly intense. Wearing sunglasses helps protect your eyes and makes it easier to watch the dolphins without squinting. As a result, your cruise becomes more comfortable and your dolphin sightings more enjoyable.

Polarized sunglasses are especially useful because they reduce glare and help you see beneath the water’s surface. This might even give you an extra advantage when spotting movement near the boat.

Pack Sunblock for a Dolphin Cruise—Even on Cloudy Days

You may not feel the sun’s full strength while on the water, but that doesn’t mean you’re safe from UV rays. In fact, many people get sunburned on cloudy days during dolphin cruises. Because of the water’s reflection, sun exposure can sneak up on you quickly.

Therefore, it’s wise to apply sunscreen before boarding and bring it with you for reapplication. Choose a water-resistant formula for longer-lasting protection, especially during longer tours.

Stay Hydrated During Your Dolphin Cruise with Water

Although some dolphin cruise operators offer drinks onboard, it’s always a good idea to bring your own bottle of water. Just make sure it’s not in a glass container for safety reasons.

Staying hydrated helps you feel your best while enjoying the open air. If the cruise takes place in the afternoon or during warmer months, this becomes even more important. After all, you want to focus on spotting dolphins—not dealing with a headache or fatigue from dehydration.

What to Wear on Your Dolphin Cruise for Maximum Comfort

Although you won’t be diving into the ocean, it’s smart to dress for the weather. During dolphin cruises, it’s often a few degrees cooler on the water than on land, especially during morning or evening tours. So, layering is key.

For example, a light jacket or windbreaker can keep you comfortable when the breeze picks up. While you won’t likely get soaked, small splashes can happen. That said, swimwear isn’t necessary—casual, weather-appropriate clothing works just fine.

You might also want to bring a hat or cap. Not only does it protect your head and face from the sun, but it also adds extra comfort throughout the cruise.

Blankets and Extra Layers Are Often Available on Dolphin Cruises

If you forget to bring something warm, don’t worry. Some Myrtle Beach dolphin cruise providers keep spare blankets or sweaters on board just in case. Still, having your own cozy gear ensures you’re always prepared—especially if you’re sensitive to cooler temperatures.

Planning a sunset dolphin cruise? Evening air can feel chilly quickly, even after a warm day. By bringing an extra layer, you can focus on the ocean views without distraction.

Dolphin Cruise Tips: Additional Items to Consider

  • Waterproof bag – Keeps your belongings dry in case of sea spray
  • Motion sickness relief – Just in case the water is choppy
  • Binoculars – Enhances your view of distant wildlife
  • Snacks – For longer tours, a quick bite helps you stay energized

While you likely won’t need much, these optional extras can enhance your comfort and help you enjoy your time at sea even more.

Choosing the Right Dolphin Cruise Time for Better Sightings

If you have a flexible schedule, consider booking a dolphin cruise with Voyager Deep Sea Fishing & Dolphin Cruises during the early morning or late afternoon. Dolphins are often more active during these times, and the lighting creates a beautiful backdrop for photos.

Additionally, weekdays can be less crowded, giving you a more peaceful experience. Fewer people on board can also mean better access to views and photo angles.

Why Dolphin Cruises Make Great Family Outings

Planning a dolphin cruise is one of those rare activities that appeals to all ages. Kids love seeing dolphins up close, while adults enjoy the peaceful views and ocean breeze. Even if you’ve been on the water before, each trip brings something new—whether it’s different wildlife or a surprise sighting.

Because every dolphin cruise is a little different, it’s an adventure you can return to again and again.

Loved it! Friendly crew, great price, and enjoyable ride to see Dolphins!
My family and I enjoyed our dolphin cruise very much! We saw several dolphin, including a baby calf! The staff was very friendly and helpful getting us on and off the boat. Definitely appreciated having the option to buy snack and drinks for my kids while aboard. The only bad thing was it was cold so we should have brought blankets. Thanks for a great boat ride!

Wonderful dolphin experience! Captain Jason and crew were amazing. We got to see shutterfly (dolphin) and had a wonderful boat ride on the Atlantic. Would go again and highly recommend.

We had an absolutely incredible experience out on the water. From the moment we stepped on the boat, the crew made us feel welcome, comfortable, and excited for the day ahead. Their energy was contagious—they were knowledgeable, patient, and clearly passionate about what they do. They went above and beyond to make sure everyone had a great time, whether it was helping us with gear or sharing tips. Highly recommend!

My husband and I came up for New Year's and booked a fishing trip with this company and was extremely pleased with the trip. The crew was helpful, knowledgeable, approachable, and just a fun good time, Brian 1 and 2 ?. The fact that the captain stopped at dolphin siting for us to take pictures and th crew would wait to allow you to take pictures of your catch was nice. I thought we were just going to go out and fish one spot but we made 3 separate spots to fish which was great!! Tips I would give anyone booking this trip is dress for the weather, bring cash and snacks, and please tip your tour guides they work extremely hard and deserve it! My family will be back in April and will definitely be booking again!!!
