Many people are curious about the risks associated with deep sea fishing. Did you know the top two most common injuries during these adventures are sunburn and dehydration?

Fortunately, both are easily preventable with some sunscreen and plenty of water. As you prepare for your next fishing trip, let’s dive into some intriguing deep sea fishing facts that will make your experience even more enjoyable.

Ever-Changing Deep Sea Fishing Conditions

To start with, fishing spots can change drastically from month to month. As seasons shift, so does the water temperature, which in turn affects the types of fish you can catch.

For example, in the summer, you might find big game fish like cobia. Conversely, in the fall, cooler waters bring species like blackfish and bass. Understanding these cycles helps you better prepare and target specific fish based on the environmental conditions.

Exploring the Depths

Additionally, did you know the Mariana Trench is the deepest part of the ocean, plunging to 36,201 feet? Thankfully, deep-sea fishing typically goes no deeper than about 2,000 feet. The ocean floor, particularly in these deeper zones, remains largely unexplored. This element of mystery is one of the most exciting aspects of deep-sea fishing; occasionally, you might reel in something entirely unexpected and rare.

Deep Water Dwellers

Interestingly, not all deep-sea fish venture near the shore. Many prefer the colder, oxygen-rich waters found at greater depths. This preference for deep water is why these species tend to grow slowly and live longer. Consequently, they often reach impressive sizes. Therefore, if you’re after a big trophy fish, heading into deeper waters is often necessary.

Record-Breaking Catches

Speaking of big fish, the heaviest fish ever caught in saltwater was a massive 2,664-pound great white shark off the coast of Australia in 1959. While you might not always catch a record-breaker, the thrill of potentially reeling in a giant fish adds an exciting edge to your fishing adventure. For example, goliath groupers and trophy sharks are impressive catches possible in deep-sea fishing.

Heavy-Duty Gear

Furthermore, for deep sea fishing in Myrtle Beach SC, the equipment used is similar to that for inshore fishing but significantly more robust. Heavy-duty rods and reels are necessary to handle larger fish like hammerhead sharks, tuna, and marlin. For instance, the biggest shark caught in Florida weighed 1,065 pounds and measured over 12 feet long. This kind of catch requires gear that can withstand immense pressure and strength.

Moonlit Fishing Adventures

One of the more interesting aspects of deep sea fishing with Voyager Deep Sea Fishing & Dolphin Cruises is how the full moon can enhance your chances of a successful catch. The moon’s light allows predatory fish to see their prey more easily, and baitfish are more likely to surface. Additionally, stronger tides during a full moon mean more active baitfish and predators. If you ever get the chance, consider trying an overnight fishing charter during a full moon for a unique experience.

Weather Front Fishing

Moreover, fishing in Myrtle Beach SC around weather fronts can also be highly productive. As a cold front approaches, fish tend to feed more actively, creating an ideal opportunity for anglers. The combination of active water and cooler air stimulates baitfish activity, making it a prime time to cast your line. However, once the front passes and conditions stabilize, fish often become less active.

Basics of Deep Sea Fishing

In addition, deep sea fishing takes place in waters deeper than 30 meters. The boats used for these excursions are larger to handle rougher conditions and bigger catches. This type of fishing targets more substantial and aggressive fish species, including hammerhead sharks, tiger sharks, marlin, and tuna.

Even beginners can enjoy deep sea fishing by booking a charter boat, where the experienced crew and captain provide guidance on techniques and target species, helping you land that big trophy fish.

Wonderful dolphin experience! Captain Jason and crew were amazing. We got to see shutterfly (dolphin) and had a wonderful boat ride on the Atlantic. Would go again and highly recommend.

We had an absolutely incredible experience out on the water. From the moment we stepped on the boat, the crew made us feel welcome, comfortable, and excited for the day ahead. Their energy was contagious—they were knowledgeable, patient, and clearly passionate about what they do. They went above and beyond to make sure everyone had a great time, whether it was helping us with gear or sharing tips. Highly recommend!

My husband and I came up for New Year's and booked a fishing trip with this company and was extremely pleased with the trip. The crew was helpful, knowledgeable, approachable, and just a fun good time, Brian 1 and 2 ?. The fact that the captain stopped at dolphin siting for us to take pictures and th crew would wait to allow you to take pictures of your catch was nice. I thought we were just going to go out and fish one spot but we made 3 separate spots to fish which was great!! Tips I would give anyone booking this trip is dress for the weather, bring cash and snacks, and please tip your tour guides they work extremely hard and deserve it! My family will be back in April and will definitely be booking again!!!
