Planning a Family Fishing Trip? Read This First

Jul 27, 2026 | fishing Myrtle Beach | 0 comments

A family fishing trip gives parents and children a chance to spend time together, learn new skills, and enjoy the water. However, the best outings start with a clear plan that considers trip length, comfort, supplies, and each child’s experience level.

Make the Most of the Last Week Before School Starts

The final week before school begins is a great time to plan one last outing with the kids. A fishing excursion can give your family a break from screens, schedules, and back-to-school errands while creating a memorable end to summer.

Voyager Deep Sea Fishing & Dolphin Cruises offers families an active way to enjoy the coast together. Instead of spending the final days of summer indoors, children can experience the boat ride, learn about fishing, and take in the sights along the water.

Start With Your Family’s Needs

Before choosing a trip, think about who will be joining you. Younger children may prefer a shorter outing, while teenagers and adults may enjoy spending more time on the water.

Ask whether each person has been on a boat before. First-time passengers may need a simple explanation of what the boat ride and fishing process will involve.

You should also consider each child’s attention span. Fishing can include quiet periods, so younger guests may need encouragement and help staying engaged.

Choose the Right Trip Length

Trip length can shape the entire experience. A shorter outing often gives beginners enough time to enjoy the boat and try fishing without becoming too tired.

Longer outings may provide additional fishing time. However, they also require more patience and comfort on the water.

When booking, ask how much time the trip may spend traveling to and from the fishing area. This information can help your family understand how the overall outing may be divided.

Planning a Fishing Adventure With the Kids

When planning a fishing adventure, include children in a few simple decisions. They can help choose approved snacks, organize personal items, or select comfortable clothing.

Give each family member a small responsibility:

  • One adult can confirm the reservation.
  • Another person can organize drinks and snacks.
  • Older children can pack personal belongings.
  • One family member can review directions and arrival details.
  • Parents can explain boat rules before departure.

Sharing tasks builds excitement before the outing. It also helps children feel like active participants rather than passengers who simply follow along.

Set Realistic Expectations

Fishing does not follow a fixed schedule. Some days bring fast action, while other days require more patience.

Explain that catching fish is only one part of the experience. The boat ride, ocean views, family conversations, and chance to learn something new also make the day worthwhile.

Avoid promising that every child will catch a fish. Instead, focus on teamwork, curiosity, and enjoying the trip together.

How to Prepare for a Family Fishing Trip

Check the company’s instructions before packing. Available equipment, storage space, food policies, and permitted items can vary by trip.

Bring only the personal items your family is likely to need. A small, organized bag is easier to manage than several large bags with loose belongings.

Helpful items may include:

  • Weather-appropriate clothing
  • Secure footwear
  • Sunscreen
  • Required medication
  • Motion-comfort supplies
  • A small towel
  • A sealed bag for personal items
  • A secured phone or camera

Confirm whether you may bring drinks, food, coolers, or personal fishing gear. Asking before arrival prevents delays and unnecessary packing.

Dress for Conditions on the Water

Weather near the shore may feel different from conditions farther out. A light layer can help when the wind picks up or the temperature changes.

Choose clothing that allows children to move comfortably. Avoid loose accessories that may blow away or get in the way.

Sun protection is also important during daytime outings. Apply sunscreen before departure and bring additional protection based on your family’s needs.

Prepare for Boat Movement

Families new to deep sea fishing should know that conditions can change once the boat reaches open water. Waves, wind, and boat movement may feel unfamiliar to first-time passengers.

If anyone has concerns about motion sickness, speak with a qualified healthcare professional before the trip. Preparing in advance may help that person feel more comfortable.

Make sure everyone eats appropriately and gets enough rest before departure. Tired or hungry children may find it harder to adjust to the boat ride.

Teach Basic Boat Safety

Explain the rules before you arrive. Children may follow instructions more easily when parents have already discussed safe behavior.

Remind children to:

  • Walk instead of run.
  • Listen to crew instructions.
  • Stay in approved areas.
  • Keep personal belongings secure.
  • Ask an adult before moving around the boat.
  • Tell a parent if they feel uncomfortable.

Parents should continue supervising children throughout the outing. Crew members can assist with fishing, but adult supervision remains essential.

Choose a Comfortable Experience for Beginners

A kid-friendly fishing trip should give children time to learn without feeling pressured. Beginners may need help holding equipment, following instructions, or waiting for a bite.

Praise effort instead of judging success by the number of fish caught. Positive encouragement helps children remain interested, even when fishing slows down.

Allow each child to enjoy the trip differently. One may love using the fishing equipment, while another may focus on the boat, birds, or scenery.

Add Fishing to Your Coastal Vacation

Families can make Myrtle Beach fishing part of their vacation without overloading the schedule. Choose a day when everyone can rest before and after the outing.

Avoid booking another major activity immediately after the trip. Children may want time to eat, relax, and talk about what they experienced.

Voyager Deep Sea Fishing & Dolphin Cruises can explain current options and help families choose an outing that matches their schedule. Share the number of adults and children in your group when asking about available trips.

A Guest’s Fishing Experience

One guest described the trip as a helpful introduction for families and beginners. Read the original Google review from MynameisAvery.

MynameisAvery

“We had a blast. We did a half day fishing voyage and it resulted in about 1.5-2 hours of actual fishing. The ride out of the intercostal channel takes a good while at idle speed and the trip from coast out to the fishing spot takes a while depending on the roughness of the sea. It was rough when we went and a few people did get sea sick. The boats are nice and the staff are super friendly and help with fishing if you need assistance. I asked multiple questions about some of the sights you see along the trip and all the staff members knew pretty much everything there was to know. There was definitely fish to be caught and we caught a few. I definitely recommend this as a good way to try out deep sea fishing before going and spending a lot more money and an entire 1-2 days on a full trip. We’ll definitely be back. I recommend learning how to use or just watching a video on the conventional fishing reel before going.”

Enjoy More Than the Catch

Take photos, but do not spend the entire outing looking through a screen. A few pictures can preserve the day while still allowing everyone to remain present.

Encourage children to ask appropriate questions. Learning about the boat, local sights, and fishing equipment can become an important part of the experience.

Stay flexible if conditions change. The crew may adjust the route or fishing location based on weather, water, or fish activity.

Voyager Deep Sea Fishing & Dolphin Cruises can help you finish summer with a day of coastal fun and shared memories. Contact the company to ask about current departures, trip lengths, and preparation guidelines, then reserve an experience suited to your family.

Wonderful dolphin experience! Captain Jason and crew were amazing. We got to see shutterfly (dolphin) and had a wonderful boat ride on the Atlantic. Would go again and highly recommend.

We had an absolutely incredible experience out on the water. From the moment we stepped on the boat, the crew made us feel welcome, comfortable, and excited for the day ahead. Their energy was contagious—they were knowledgeable, patient, and clearly passionate about what they do. They went above and beyond to make sure everyone had a great time, whether it was helping us with gear or sharing tips. Highly recommend!

Didn't see dolphins. But, it was a beautiful day on the water. They make it easy to check in and genuinely offer help to everyone. A special day for my grandkids and I.

My husband and I came up for New Year's and booked a fishing trip with this company and was extremely pleased with the trip. The crew was helpful, knowledgeable, approachable, and just a fun good time, Brian 1 and 2 ?. The fact that the captain stopped at dolphin siting for us to take pictures and th crew would wait to allow you to take pictures of your catch was nice. I thought we were just going to go out and fish one spot but we made 3 separate spots to fish which was great!! Tips I would give anyone booking this trip is dress for the weather, bring cash and snacks, and please tip your tour guides they work extremely hard and deserve it! My family will be back in April and will definitely be booking again!!!
