Deep Sea Fishing With Kids: A Parent’s Guide to a Fun Myrtle Beach Experience

Oct 15, 2026 | deep sea fishing | 0 comments

Deep sea fishing with kids gives families a chance to explore the Atlantic Ocean, learn new skills, and make lasting vacation memories. However, choosing the right boat, preparing for offshore conditions, and setting realistic expectations can make a big difference. With a little planning, parents can help children enjoy their first experience on the water.

At Voyager Deep Sea Fishing & Dolphin Cruises, families can explore fishing opportunities along the Grand Strand. Whether your children have never held a rod or already enjoy fishing, a well-planned outing can introduce them to ocean wildlife and hands-on learning.

Is Deep Sea Fishing With Kids a Good Family Activity?

Yes, offshore fishing can be a rewarding activity for children who feel comfortable on boats and can follow basic safety instructions. However, parents should consider each child’s age, attention span, and ability to handle changing sea conditions.

Unlike fishing from a pier, an offshore outing introduces children to deeper waters and different marine environments. It also creates opportunities for a family adventure that combines excitement with education.

Children can enjoy several benefits:

  • Hands-on learning: Discover how rods, reels, bait, and fishing techniques work.
  • Teamwork: Help family members and listen to crew instructions.
  • Patience: Learn that catching fish takes time and persistence.
  • Outdoor discovery: Observe seabirds, ocean conditions, and marine life.
  • Family bonding: Share experiences away from phones and screens.

Most importantly, children do not need to catch a large fish to have a great time. Simply learning to reel in a line can become a favorite vacation memory.

What Age Is Best for Taking Children Offshore?

There is no single perfect age for a child’s first offshore outing. Instead, parents should consider the child’s comfort level, swimming ability, maturity, and previous boating experience.

Before booking a fishing trip, ask the operator about minimum ages, available child-sized life jackets, and trip length. Also, consider whether your child can remain comfortable during travel to and from the fishing grounds.

For younger children, a shorter outing may be easier than spending most of the day offshore. Older children may enjoy longer trips with additional opportunities to learn fishing techniques.

How Do You Prepare for Deep Sea Fishing With Kids?Deep sea fishing with kids in Myrtle Beach SC

Preparation starts before your family reaches the dock. Explain what children should expect, including boat movement, ocean spray, waiting periods, and instructions from the crew.

For a successful fishing adventure, teach children these simple rules:

  • Walk carefully and avoid running on deck.
  • Hold railings when moving around the boat.
  • Keep hands away from hooks, bait, and moving equipment.
  • Follow the captain’s and crew’s directions.
  • Never lean over the railing.
  • Ask an adult or crew member for help when needed.

Additionally, explain that ocean conditions can change. Even calm weather near shore does not guarantee smooth water farther offshore.

Parents should also check the weather forecast and follow the captain’s recommendations before departure.

What Should Parents Pack for a Family Fishing Outing?

Packing the right supplies helps children stay comfortable throughout the day. Sun protection, hydration, and suitable clothing are especially important on open water.

Essential item Why it matters
Sunscreen and sun hats Protect exposed skin from sunlight
Polarized sunglasses Reduce glare from the water
Non-slip shoes Provide better footing on wet surfaces
Water and snacks Help children stay hydrated and energized
Lightweight layers Provide comfort when temperatures change
Motion sickness supplies Help families prepare for possible seasickness
Small activity or book Keep children occupied during slower periods

Before leaving, confirm what the fishing charter provides, including rods, reels, bait, and safety equipment.

If your child has a history of motion sickness, ask a healthcare professional about age-appropriate prevention options before departure.

How Can Kids Learn to Fish Safely?

Children often learn best when they participate rather than simply watch. Start with simple tasks, such as identifying fishing equipment and understanding how a reel works.

During the outing, encourage children to:

  • Practice holding a rod correctly.
  • Learn how to recognize a bite.
  • Reel steadily while following instructions.
  • Observe how the crew handles fish.
  • Ask questions about the species they encounter.

Meanwhile, let trained crew members handle sharp hooks, complicated tackle, and any fish that could cause injury.

Voyager Deep Sea Fishing & Dolphin Cruises offers families an opportunity to experience offshore fishing while learning from the crew. Parents should explain their children’s experience levels before booking so they can choose an appropriate outing.

How Can Parents Keep Children Interested Between Catches?

Fishing requires patience, especially when fish are not biting. Therefore, parents should plan simple activities that help children enjoy the entire experience.

Encourage children to watch for seabirds, identify different boats, or photograph interesting sights. You can also discuss ocean habitats and ask what they notice about the water.

For families considering family fishing in Myrtle Beach SC, realistic expectations matter. Fish activity varies with weather, season, location, and other natural conditions, so catches are never guaranteed.

Celebrate small achievements instead of focusing only on the number of fish caught.

What Should You Ask Before Booking?

Before planning deep sea fishing with kids, ask the operator a few practical questions. The answers can help you decide whether the outing suits your family’s needs.

  1. Are there minimum age requirements?
  2. How long will the boat stay offshore?
  3. Are child-sized life jackets available?
  4. Does the crew help beginners?
  5. What happens if weather conditions become unsafe?
  6. What equipment and supplies should families bring?

These questions help parents compare options and prepare children for the experience.

Wonderful dolphin experience! Captain Jason and crew were amazing. We got to see shutterfly (dolphin) and had a wonderful boat ride on the Atlantic. Would go again and highly recommend.

We had an absolutely incredible experience out on the water. From the moment we stepped on the boat, the crew made us feel welcome, comfortable, and excited for the day ahead. Their energy was contagious—they were knowledgeable, patient, and clearly passionate about what they do. They went above and beyond to make sure everyone had a great time, whether it was helping us with gear or sharing tips. Highly recommend!

My husband and I came up for New Year's and booked a fishing trip with this company and was extremely pleased with the trip. The crew was helpful, knowledgeable, approachable, and just a fun good time, Brian 1 and 2 ?. The fact that the captain stopped at dolphin siting for us to take pictures and th crew would wait to allow you to take pictures of your catch was nice. I thought we were just going to go out and fish one spot but we made 3 separate spots to fish which was great!! Tips I would give anyone booking this trip is dress for the weather, bring cash and snacks, and please tip your tour guides they work extremely hard and deserve it! My family will be back in April and will definitely be booking again!!!
