Can Beginners Go Deep Sea Fishing in Myrtle Beach? What First-Time Anglers Should Know

Sep 24, 2026 | deep sea fishing | 0 comments

Never been offshore fishing before? You don’t have to be an experienced angler to enjoy the adventure. Deep sea fishing can be a good choice for beginners because the crew can explain the equipment, basic techniques, safety procedures, and what to expect throughout the trip.

Voyager Deep Sea Fishing & Dolphin Cruises welcomes guests with different experience levels, including people who have never held a fishing rod. Your job is to arrive prepared, listen to the crew, and enjoy being on the water.

Quick Answer: Can Beginners Go Fishing Offshore?

Yes. Beginners can enjoy an offshore trip without having previous fishing experience. The crew can help explain how the equipment works and provide guidance once fishing begins.

For many guests, the biggest challenge is simply not knowing what will happen. Understanding the basic schedule before arriving can make the experience feel much easier.

A typical trip includes:

  • Checking in before departure
  • Boarding and finding your place on the vessel
  • Listening to safety information
  • Traveling to fishing areas
  • Receiving instructions about equipment and techniques
  • Fishing with crew assistance available
  • Returning to the dock after the scheduled trip

Conditions, travel time, and fishing locations can vary. Therefore, guests should arrive with realistic expectations and a willingness to follow the captain’s instructions.

What Happens Before a Deep Sea Fishing Trip Leaves the Dock?

Arrive early enough to check in without feeling rushed. Follow the departure instructions provided when you reserve your trip because boarding procedures and departure times may vary.

Once aboard, pay attention to crew announcements. The captain and crew may explain safety equipment, vessel rules, fishing procedures, and what guests should do while the boat is underway.

This is also a good time to organize your personal items. Keep sunscreen, clothing, snacks, and other necessities somewhere that you can reach them without blocking walkways.

If this is your first fishing trip, ask questions when something is unclear. It is much easier to understand the process before fishing starts than to figure everything out while everyone is preparing their lines.

Do Beginners Need to Bring Their Own Fishing Equipment?

One advantage of charter fishing is that beginners generally do not need years of experience or a personal collection of specialized equipment to participate. Check your specific trip information before departure so you know what fishing gear is provided and what personal items you should bring.

The crew can explain basic techniques when needed. They may show guests how to handle equipment, work with the line, and respond when there is activity on the other end.

Listen carefully instead of trying to learn everything at once. Fishing techniques can vary depending on conditions, location, equipment, and the type of trip.

The goal for a beginner should be to become comfortable with the process. There is no need to arrive expecting to fish like an experienced angler.

What Should First-Time Anglers Wear?

Comfort matters when you will spend several hours on a boat. Weather on land does not always feel the same once you are traveling over open water.

Dress in layers when temperatures may change. Choose comfortable clothing that allows you to move easily and bring protection from the sun.

Helpful items may include:

  • Non-slip or secure footwear
  • Sunglasses
  • Hat or visor
  • Sunscreen
  • Light jacket or extra layer
  • Rain protection when appropriate
  • Small bag for personal belongings

When fishing in Myrtle Beach, conditions can change from the dock to open water. Check the forecast before leaving, but prepare for changing wind, sun, and temperatures as well.

How Can Beginners Prepare for Seasickness?

Deep sea fishing in Myrtle Beach SCMotion affects everyone differently. Someone who feels fine on a short boat ride may react differently after spending several hours on open water.

If you know you are sensitive to motion, prepare before the vessel leaves the dock. Ask your healthcare provider or pharmacist about appropriate motion-sickness options if you are unsure what is safe for you.

Eating a light meal before departure may be more comfortable than boarding with an empty stomach. Avoid experimenting with unfamiliar foods or drinks immediately before leaving.

Once aboard, fresh air and looking toward the horizon may help some passengers feel more comfortable. Follow crew instructions if you begin feeling unwell.

At Voyager Deep Sea Fishing & Dolphin Cruises, first-time guests should feel comfortable asking practical questions before departure. Knowing what to expect can make preparation easier.

What Food and Drinks Should You Bring?

Check the specific trip information before packing food or drinks. Rules and available services can depend on the trip you select.

For longer trips, think about what you normally need during several hours away from shore. Water, simple snacks, and food that travels well can help you stay comfortable.

Avoid bringing excessive gear. Space aboard a fishing vessel matters, so pack what you need without turning your fishing area into a storage area.

A well-planned deep sea fishing outing is easier when you handle these basic needs before departure. Once fishing begins, you can focus on the experience instead of searching through bags.

How Long Should a Beginner’s Trip Be?

Trip length is one of the most important decisions for a new angler. A shorter trip may appeal to families, younger anglers, or guests who are unsure how they will handle being on the water.

Longer trips can mean spending additional time traveling and being away from the dock. They may appeal to guests who want a fuller day on the water and feel comfortable with a longer commitment.

Consider:

  • How comfortable are you on boats?
  • Are children joining you?
  • Do you become tired easily in the sun?
  • Are you comfortable being away from land for several hours?
  • Do you want a shorter introduction or a longer fishing experience?

Do not automatically choose the longest trip because you think longer always means better. The right choice depends on your group, comfort level, schedule, and expectations.

What Should Beginners Expect Once Fishing Starts?

Once the vessel reaches a fishing area, listen closely to the crew. Instructions may come quickly because everyone needs to prepare safely and efficiently.

Do not worry if another passenger seems more experienced. Focus on your own equipment and follow the directions you receive.

The captain may move the boat during the trip as conditions change. Fishing locations are never guaranteed, and neither are catches.

Part of the experience is spending time on the ocean and learning something new. For many beginners, becoming comfortable with the equipment and learning the rhythm of fishing is part of the adventure.

What Happens When the Boat Returns?

As the vessel heads back, organize your belongings and follow crew instructions. Avoid packing equipment or moving around in ways that could interfere with the crew.

Once you reach the dock, double-check your area for phones, sunglasses, bags, clothing, and other personal items. Then follow instructions for leaving the vessel safely.

Your first trip does not have to make you an expert. It simply gives you a chance to experience fishing offshore and decide what type of trip you might enjoy next time.

Wonderful dolphin experience! Captain Jason and crew were amazing. We got to see shutterfly (dolphin) and had a wonderful boat ride on the Atlantic. Would go again and highly recommend.

We had an absolutely incredible experience out on the water. From the moment we stepped on the boat, the crew made us feel welcome, comfortable, and excited for the day ahead. Their energy was contagious—they were knowledgeable, patient, and clearly passionate about what they do. They went above and beyond to make sure everyone had a great time, whether it was helping us with gear or sharing tips. Highly recommend!

My husband and I came up for New Year's and booked a fishing trip with this company and was extremely pleased with the trip. The crew was helpful, knowledgeable, approachable, and just a fun good time, Brian 1 and 2 ?. The fact that the captain stopped at dolphin siting for us to take pictures and th crew would wait to allow you to take pictures of your catch was nice. I thought we were just going to go out and fish one spot but we made 3 separate spots to fish which was great!! Tips I would give anyone booking this trip is dress for the weather, bring cash and snacks, and please tip your tour guides they work extremely hard and deserve it! My family will be back in April and will definitely be booking again!!!
